Week of Prayer
and Fasting

September 8-15
A time  to intentionally seek God in Prayer and believe for Him to move as we move into the Fall Season

WHY WE FAST

“Fasting helps us to express, to deepen, and to confirm the resolution that we are ready to sacrifice anything, even ourselves, to attain the Kingdom of God.” — Andrew Murray

Fasting is the act of choosing to abstain from food for a period of time. When we fast, we are practicing spiritual discipline by sacrificing one of our most essential daily routines. There is power in the absence of food as we hunger after the word and seek God with our mind, heart, body and spirit. There are several different ways that we can partner both prayer and fasting together.

HERE IS HOW WE ARE FASTING IN THIS SEASON AS A CHURCH:

COMPLETE FAST: Consuming only liquids for a specific period of time.
PARTIAL FAST: Abstaining from specific kinds of food. Example- Daniel Fast
SOUL FAST: Choosing to abstain from certain technologies for a specific period of time.

RESOURCES

STEP 1

PREPARE

How do we make the Bible reading and prayer part of our daily life?
We can learn from three things Jesus did.
"And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He departed and went out to a desolate place, and there He prayed." - Mark 1:35 ESV

A Certain TIME

Jesus got up early in the morning to spend time with His Heavenly Father. We should do the same. Make a daily appointment with God and keep it.

A Certain PLACE

Jesus had a prayer place. Your prayer place needs to be an undistracted environment where you can pray out loud and perhaps have some worship music playing in the background.

A Certain PLAN

Plan to read Scripture daily, spend time in prayer and incorporate a fasting plan into the week.

STEP 2

READ THE SCRIPTURE

Calvary Church will be partnering with the BibleProject and Read Scripture who have created a unique and powerful daily reading experience called Read Scripture to help you engage with the Bible. We encourage you to download the Read Scripture app and the BibleProject app (linked below).

DAILY B.R.E.A.D.

We will daily approach to Scripture using the acronym BREAD to guide us. This approach to Scripture reading invites to
BE STILL: Find a place where you can encounter God, ask Him to fill the space and then take a minute in stillness
READ: Read scripture slowly and look for one verse that stands out, grabs your attention, or interests you.
ENCOUNTER: Take your chosen verse and meditate on it, consider what God might be saying to you.
APPLY: Turn your focus outwards, think about how you might be able to apply this to your day.
DEVOTE: Close by writing a simple prayer of devotion to God.
